As households pile up separate subscriptions for video, music, and apps, many feel buried under monthly bills — a feeling often dubbed 'subscription fatigue.'
Bundling is the industry's main answer to subscription fatigue because it repackages several services a household already wants into one combined bill at a lower total price than buying each separately. This makes customers feel they are getting more value for their money, which reduces the temptation to cancel individual subscriptions during a budget review. Streaming companies increasingly borrow this idea from old cable-TV packages, just rebuilt for the internet age.
Banning cancellations would be illegal in most markets and would only accelerate customer anger rather than loyalty, while deleting content from a library would drive subscribers away instantly, the opposite of what any streaming business wants.
Bundling can also work across entirely different industries, such as phone carriers throwing in free streaming subscriptions with a mobile plan, turning entertainment into a way to keep customers loyal to an unrelated service.
