Most elements heavier than hydrogen — the carbon, oxygen, and iron in your body — were forged inside ancient stars and scattered when they died. You are, quite literally, made of stardust.

Most atoms in your body, the carbon in your muscles, the oxygen you breathe, the iron in your blood, were forged inside stars through nuclear fusion, which builds heavier elements from lighter ones under a star's immense pressure and heat. When those stars died, often in supernova explosions, they scattered these elements into space, where they eventually became part of new stars, planets, and living things.

Earth's oceans and the Sun today are not where these elements originally formed, the oceans are just where water and minerals ended up, and while fusion still happens inside the Sun, the heavier elements in your body predate it, coming from earlier generations of stars.

This is the origin of the phrase that we are all made of stardust, a poetic but scientifically accurate description of atoms tracing back through stellar deaths billions of years before the solar system existed.
