Many English words grow from a single Latin root. 'Spectator', 'inspect', and 'respect' all share the root 'spec' — what does it mean?

look
'Spec' (Latin specere) = to look. A spectator looks on, you inspect by looking into, and respect once meant to 'look back at' with regard.

The Latin root "spec" (from "specere," to look) runs through "spectator" (one who looks on), "inspect" (to look into closely), and "respect" (which originally meant to look back at someone with regard), showing how a single root can spread across words that seem unrelated at first glance.

"Speak" and "hold" are unrelated meanings carried by entirely different Latin roots, so neither matches the actual sense buried inside "spec," even though the words built from it can superficially seem to cover a range of ideas.

Once you know "spec" means look, other words snap into focus too — "spectacle" (a striking sight), "specimen" (something looked at as an example), and "speculate" (to look into possibilities) all share the same visual core.
