A VPN, or virtual private network, routes your internet traffic through an encrypted tunnel to a server operated by the VPN provider before it reaches its final destination. This encryption protects your data from being intercepted by others sharing the same public Wi-Fi network, and because your traffic appears to originate from the VPN server's location rather than your own, it also masks your real IP address and can let you access content or websites restricted to particular regions.
A VPN does not make your internet permanently free; you're still paying your regular internet provider, and many VPN services themselves charge a subscription fee. It also doesn't double your storage space, since a VPN concerns how your data travels across networks, not how much data you can store.
Because a VPN can make your traffic appear to come from another country entirely, it's commonly used by travelers and expatriates to access streaming shows or services available only in their home country while they are physically abroad.
