Look at Saturn through a telescope and you'll spot beautiful rings circling all the way around it!
Saturn's rings are mostly made of chunks of ice and rock, ranging from tiny grains barely bigger than dust up to pieces as large as a house, all orbiting the planet together in a wide, flat disk. Sunlight reflecting off all these countless icy fragments is what makes the rings appear so bright and clearly visible through a telescope.
Colorful gas clouds and melted metal are not what forms the rings, since gas would simply disperse rather than stay locked in a thin ring shape, and there's no evidence of liquid metal orbiting the planet like this.
Despite stretching incredibly wide across space, Saturn's rings are surprisingly thin, in most places just tens of meters thick, like a giant, flat icy pancake circling the planet.
