Modern taste researchers say the tongue map is a myth, and that taste buds spread across the whole tongue can detect all the basic tastes rather than each being confined to one specific zone. The idea traced back to a mistranslated interpretation of an old German study from the early 20th century, and later research using more careful taste testing across different parts of the tongue debunked the strict zone-based version entirely.

It is not accurate or confirmed by modern imaging, quite the opposite, imaging and taste-testing studies are exactly what overturned it. And it certainly isn't a distinction that only applies to people over 40; the mechanism of taste bud distribution doesn't change with age in the way that option implies.
