A honeybee's waggle dance encodes both the direction and distance of a food source relative to the hive, communicated through a figure-eight movement combined with a straight 'waggle run.' The angle of that waggle run compared to straight up indicates direction relative to the sun's position, while how long the bee waggles indicates how far away the flowers are, letting other bees fly straight to a rich food source without having to search for it themselves.
The dance has nothing to do with hive temperature or choosing a new queen — those are handled through entirely different behaviors and chemical signals within the colony, unrelated to the waggle dance's specific role in describing food locations.
This discovery, made by Karl von Frisch, was significant enough to earn him a Nobel Prize in 1973, and later research found bees can even adjust their dance to account for wind or obstacles standing between the hive and the food.
