You point it at something fun, press a button, and it freezes that moment forever on paper or on a screen.

What invention captures light to make a picture?

A camera
A camera catches light bouncing off whatever you point it at and turns it into a picture, so you can look back at that exact moment anytime you want.

A camera works by letting light from whatever you're pointing at pass through a lens and land on a sensor or film, which records that pattern of light as an image. Pressing the button captures that split second permanently, so you can look back at it long after the moment has passed.

A whistle only makes sound when you blow air through it, and a blanket just keeps you warm — neither one has any way of sensing or recording light, so neither can create a picture.

Early cameras needed people to hold perfectly still for several seconds or even minutes to capture one photo, which is part of why old photographs often show people with very serious, unsmiling faces.
