Why does Seoul subway fare change depending on your destination? What's the basic principle of Korean urban rail pricing?

A base fare plus distance-based add-ons, proportional to how far you travel
The metro area subway uses distance-based pricing: a base fare up to a certain distance, then add-ons every few kilometers. That's why tapping off matters — the system needs to know where you exited. Transfers across lines are calculated together by total distance.

Seoul-area subway fares combine a base fare covering trips up to a certain distance with additional charges added incrementally for every extra few kilometers traveled beyond that threshold, so a longer trip genuinely costs more than a short hop. This distance-based structure is also why tapping your card when exiting matters so much: the system needs the exit-station data to calculate exactly how far you traveled and bill accordingly.

Fares do not simply vary by time of day, since Korea's rail system doesn't peak-price rides the way some other cities do, and a flat per-ride rate would ignore the actual mechanism entirely, since short and long trips clearly cost different amounts.

Because transfers across different subway lines and even between subway and bus are calculated together as one continuous journey by total distance, riders who transfer smartly can travel impressively far across a metro area for a fare only marginally higher than a short single-line ride.
