math

Cut a pizza into two equal pieces and take one.

How much is one half?

One of two equal parts
A half means a whole shared into two equal parts, so you get exactly one of them. Two halves always join back into one whole.

When something is split into two equal parts, each part is a half. Cutting a pizza into two equal pieces and taking one gives you exactly one of those two equal parts.

The whole thing would mean taking both pieces, and three small parts would mean the pizza was cut into thirds, not halves.

Halves show up everywhere, from splitting a cookie with a friend to telling time, since 'half past' means thirty minutes, exactly half an hour.
