Hold a short pencil next to a long ruler.
The ruler is longer than the pencil. Measuring lets us compare the sizes of two objects fairly, and when you line them up side by side, the ruler stretches farther along than the short pencil does.
They are not the same length; if they were, lining them up next to each other would show their ends matching exactly, and that isn't the case here. We use standard units like centimeters marked on a ruler so that everyone measuring the same object gets the same answer, no matter who's doing the measuring.
