You have 3 red balloons and someone gives you 2 more.

How many balloons do you have now?

5
3 balloons plus 2 more balloons makes 5 balloons in all. When you put two groups together, you are adding!

You start with 3 balloons, and someone gives you 2 more, so you add them together: 3 plus 2 equals 5 balloons in all.

4 is too few, since you'd be forgetting one of the balloons someone gave you, and 6 is too many, since no extra balloon appeared out of nowhere.

Adding is simply putting two groups together to make one bigger group, and you can check it by actually counting all the balloons out loud, one by one, up to 5!
