People have been writing messages for thousands of years!
Ancient people wrote on stone and clay before paper was invented. They carved words into stone tablets and monuments to make messages last a very long time, and they also pressed marks into soft wet clay with a stylus, letting the clay harden and preserve the writing, a method used for everything from record-keeping to letters.
Plastic sheets did not exist until modern times, long after paper itself, so they could not have come before it. Computer screens are even more recent, invented only in the last century, so neither option fits the ancient writing materials being described.
Some of the oldest known writing systems, like cuneiform pressed into clay tablets in ancient Mesopotamia, have survived for thousands of years precisely because baked or dried clay is so durable, giving historians today a direct window into daily life from millennia ago.
