Of the seven wonders the ancient world marveled at, time has toppled every one but a single survivor.

Which of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World is the only one still standing today?

The Great Pyramid of Giza
Of the seven ancient wonders, only the Great Pyramid of Giza survives. It is also the oldest of the seven by far — already ancient when the others were built.

The Great Pyramid survives because it was built almost entirely from immense stone blocks stacked into a solid, self-supporting mass, far more durable than the wooden structures or bronze statues used for the other wonders. Its scale and simple geometric form also gave it fewer weak points than more delicate wonders vulnerable to earthquakes, fires, and looting over the centuries.

The Hanging Gardens left no confirmed archaeological trace and may be partly legendary, while the Colossus of Rhodes, a giant bronze statue, toppled in an earthquake only decades after being built — both far more fragile than solid stone.

The Great Pyramid was already over two thousand years old by the time the other six wonders were built, meaning ancient tourists visiting it looked at something as distant to them as the Roman Empire is to us.
