The Rosetta Stone, unearthed in Egypt in 1799, became the key to unlocking a script that had baffled scholars for centuries.
The Rosetta Stone helped decipher ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs. It carries the same royal decree carved in three scripts, hieroglyphic, Demotic, and Greek, and because scholars could already read Greek, Jean-François Champollion was able to compare the known Greek text against the unknown hieroglyphic symbols and crack the code in 1822.
Sumerian cuneiform and Mycenaean Linear B are two other ancient writing systems, but they were deciphered separately, decades later, using entirely different methods and evidence, so neither one owes its decipherment to the Rosetta Stone.
The stone was unearthed by French soldiers during Napoleon's Egyptian campaign in 1799 and today sits in the British Museum, having passed to British hands after France's forces surrendered in Egypt.
