The woolly mammoth looked like an elephant covered in thick shaggy fur, with long curved tusks, built to survive the freezing cold of the Ice Age.
A giraffe has a long neck but no tusks or shaggy fur, and a kangaroo hops on two legs — neither one looks anything like this huge, hairy Ice Age animal.
Some woolly mammoths have been found frozen and amazingly well preserved in ice for thousands of years, so well preserved that scientists can sometimes even study their ancient fur and stomach contents.
