history
In February 2025, a joint Egyptian-British archaeological mission announced a find widely called the most significant Egyptian discovery since 1922.
The tomb was identified through alabaster jar fragments inscribed with Thutmose II's name, calling him the 'deceased king,' giving archaeologists direct written proof rather than just circumstantial evidence — royal burial goods were typically labeled specifically for their owner.
Ramesses II and Nefertiti are famous ancient Egyptian figures but aren't connected to this find; their own monuments have separate, previously known histories. Thutmose II's tomb had never been located before.
Ancient flooding had damaged the tomb, and its contents, including the mummy, were already moved to a secondary hiding place by ancient priests, a common practice protecting royals from tomb robbers.
