Ancient Indian mathematicians were the first to treat zero not merely as a placeholder in writing numbers but as an actual number in its own right, one that could be added, subtracted, and used in calculations. This conceptual leap was crucial because it enabled the place-value number system we use today, where the position of a digit determines its value, something far harder to do without a true zero.
Ancient Rome used numerals (like I, V, X, L, C) that had no symbol or concept for zero at all, making arithmetic notably clumsy by comparison. Ancient Greece, despite huge advances in geometry and logic, likewise did not develop zero as a working number in its mathematics.
The concept of zero traveled from India through Islamic scholars in the Middle East, who preserved and expanded on it, and from there into medieval Europe, eventually becoming the foundation of the algebra, calculus, and computer science built on numerical systems today.
