Neutron stars are the collapsed remnants of massive stars that exploded as supernovae, packing roughly the mass of the Sun into a sphere only about the width of a city. A single teaspoon of that material would weigh several billion tons, a consequence of atomic nuclei being crushed together so tightly that ordinary atomic structure essentially collapses.
A weight of about one ton or 100 kilograms would describe very dense materials by everyday standards, like lead or osmium, but both figures fall far short of neutron-star density, understating it by many orders of magnitude.
If a neutron star gains just a bit more mass, it can collapse further still into a black hole, where gravity becomes so strong that not even light can escape.
