In the 1880s, an eye doctor named L. L. Zamenhof grew up in a town where rival ethnic groups often clashed, and he dreamed that a shared tongue might ease the tension.
Esperanto was designed with deliberately simple, regular grammar and vocabulary drawn from several European languages so it could be learned far faster than a natural language, and crucially it belonged to no single nation, making it a neutral meeting ground. Zamenhof grew up in a town divided among Poles, Russians, Germans, and Jews who often distrusted one another, and he believed a shared, easy second language could reduce friction by giving everyone equal footing.
Esperanto is not an ancient sacred tongue — it was invented from scratch in the 1880s — and it predates modern computing by nearly a century, so it has nothing to do with programming languages.
Esperanto still has an active community of speakers today, including some raised with it as a native language, making it the most successful constructed language ever created.
