This range was settled on because it comfortably covers nearly the entire spectrum of pitches that the human ear perceives as clearly musical, from very low rumbling bass notes to very high, bright treble notes, giving composers and performers enough range for almost any piece of music.
100 keys would extend well beyond what most music requires and isn't the standard built by piano makers, while 52 is actually just the count of white keys alone, not the full total once the black keys are included.
Early pianos had far fewer keys, often around 60, and the range only grew to 88 over the 18th and 19th centuries as composers demanded a wider pitch range and manufacturing techniques improved enough to build sturdier, more precisely tuned instruments.
