Rather than passively viewing a webpage or app on a flat screen, the vision behind the metaverse is an internet you feel present inside of, moving through 3D environments alongside other people represented by avatars.

Despite enormous investment and hype from several major tech companies in recent years, adoption of fully immersive metaverse platforms has grown more slowly than many predicted, with most people still primarily experiencing virtual worlds through familiar formats like online games rather than dedicated VR headsets.
