LiDAR, short for Light Detection and Ranging, works by firing rapid laser pulses outward and timing how long each one takes to bounce back, which lets the sensor calculate distance to every surface around it and assemble those measurements into a detailed 3D map, often called a point cloud, of the surrounding world.
Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are both short-range wireless communication technologies used for things like connecting devices to the internet or pairing headphones, neither has anything to do with measuring distance or building 3D maps of the environment.
Tesla is a notable outlier in the industry, betting instead on a suite of ordinary cameras paired with AI rather than LiDAR, arguing that since roads are designed for human eyes, vision alone should be enough, a bet still hotly debated among self-driving engineers.
