This risk grows as tens of thousands of satellites increasingly crowd low Earth orbit, making careful tracking and coordination between operators essential to prevent chain-reaction disasters.

Collisions do not quickly drain satellites' solar batteries, since that describes a power-related issue unrelated to physical impacts between objects in orbit. Crashes also do not interfere with Earth's magnetic field, which is generated deep within the planet and unaffected by events happening in orbit above it.

This growing danger is known as Kessler syndrome, a scenario where cascading collisions generate ever more debris, potentially making certain crowded orbits so hazardous that they become difficult or impossible to use safely for future satellites.
