Plant cells were what researchers grew in the bioreactor to make this lab-brewed coffee, multiplying coffee plant cells directly in a controlled tank environment rather than growing whole coffee trees on a farm. The resulting cell biomass was then processed and roasted to produce a drink meant to resemble traditional brewed coffee, without needing any farmland, sunlight, or years of tree growth.
