Making ordinary cement releases enormous amounts of carbon dioxide, so some companies now inject captured CO2 into fresh concrete as it is mixed.

What does injecting CO2 into fresh concrete mainly do?

Locks the CO2 inside as a solid mineral
The injected CO2 reacts with calcium to form a solid mineral, trapping it permanently and even strengthening the mix. Cement production causes roughly 8% of global CO2 emissions, so curbing it matters a lot.

Injecting CO2 into fresh concrete locks the CO2 inside as a solid mineral, since the injected carbon dioxide chemically reacts with calcium compounds already present in the concrete mix, converting the gas into a stable mineral form that becomes permanently embedded within the hardened concrete rather than escaping back into the atmosphere. This reaction can even slightly strengthen the final mixture.

Making the concrete glow in the dark is not an effect associated with mineralizing captured carbon dioxide into concrete. Turning the concrete into plastic is likewise not what this chemical reaction achieves, since the CO2 becomes a solid mineral additive rather than transforming the material's fundamental composition into plastic.

Curbing this source of emissions matters enormously because cement production alone is responsible for roughly 8 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions, making even modest improvements in the manufacturing process meaningful on a global climate scale.
