In January 2024, a company co-founded by Elon Musk implanted a coin-sized chip with ultrathin threads into a human brain for the first time.
The recipient's first ability was moving a computer cursor purely by imagining movement, no actual muscle activity needed, because the implant's threads read electrical signals directly from the brain region controlling intended movement. Software translated those patterns into digital commands, letting thought substitute for the hand movements paralysis prevented.
Walking again would require restoring movement to paralyzed limbs themselves, a far more complex spinal-cord challenge this demonstration didn't address. Restoring touch would require feeding sensory information into the brain, the reverse of reading outgoing motor intention.
This implant detects the same neural firing patterns that would normally travel down the spinal cord to move a limb, meaning the brain still generates a normal 'move my hand' signal even though the body can't receive it.
