Smart rings worn on a finger have become popular for tracking sleep and recovery, packing sensors into a tiny band.
Smart rings mainly measure signs like heart rate, temperature, and movement while you sleep. They use small optical sensors that shine light into the skin to detect blood flow tied to heart rate, along with temperature sensors and motion detectors, combining that data to estimate which sleep stage you are likely in and how well you slept.
They cannot read your exact dream content, since dreams occur as internal brain activity that a finger-worn sensor has no way to directly observe, and they have no ability to measure the calories in a meal, which would require entirely different kinds of information the ring simply does not collect.
Because these estimates are inferred indirectly from heart rate, temperature, and motion rather than measured directly the way a clinical sleep lab does, smart ring readings are useful for spotting trends but are not as precise as a full medical sleep study.
