Modern farmers fly drones carrying cameras that capture light beyond what human eyes can see, revealing crop stress days before it shows on the ground.

What kind of imaging lets these drones detect plant health early?

Multispectral imaging
Multispectral cameras measure how plants reflect specific wavelengths, especially near-infrared, which fades when crops are stressed. Farmers turn these maps into precise water and fertilizer plans, a core idea of precision agriculture.

Multispectral imaging lets drone-mounted cameras detect crop stress early by capturing light beyond the narrow band humans can see with the naked eye, especially near-infrared wavelengths. Healthy plants reflect near-infrared light strongly, but that reflection fades noticeably when a plant becomes stressed from drought, disease, or nutrient deficiency, often days before any visible discoloration appears to someone walking through the field.

Black-and-white photography simply removes color information from a normal visible-light image and reveals nothing about invisible wavelengths or plant health. Long-exposure photography is a technique for capturing motion or low-light scenes over an extended shutter time, unrelated to detecting the specific reflectance signatures that reveal crop stress.

Farmers convert these multispectral readings into detailed maps that guide exactly where to add water or fertilizer, a core practice known as precision agriculture that aims to treat every part of a field according to its actual, specific needs.
