After you eat a meal, your body needs to break the food down into tiny pieces it can actually use for energy.

What do we call this process?

Digestion
Digestion starts the moment you take a bite — your stomach and a long tube called the intestine team up to turn food into fuel for your whole day.

Digestion is the whole journey food takes through your body: chewing starts it, your stomach mashes it with special juices, and your intestines pull out the good stuff to use as energy.

Breathing just moves air in and out of your lungs, a totally different job. Sleeping only rests your body and brain and doesn't break down food at all.

Your food actually travels through your body for many hours, often a whole day, before everything useful has been taken out.
