What has become basic manners when boarding a subway or elevator in Korea?

Let those getting off exit first, then board, and step aside by the door
On Korean transit and elevators, letting people exit before you board is basic manners. If you're standing by the door, step aside briefly to make room for people getting off. During crowded rush hours especially, keeping this flow reduces friction and makes a good impression.

Letting people exit a subway car or elevator before boarding keeps the flow of movement efficient, since blocking the doorway to push in early just creates a bottleneck that slows everyone down, including the person trying to board. Standing slightly to the side of the doors, rather than directly in front of them, similarly leaves a clear path for people getting off.

Pushing in the instant doors open ignores this flow entirely and tends to create crowding, especially during rush hour. Blocking people from exiting first, the opposite behavior, causes the same congestion problem from another angle.

This exit-first norm is reinforced by markings and announcements on many Korean subway platforms, making it one of the more visibly enforced pieces of everyday etiquette in daily commuting life.
