A praying mantis sits very still on a leaf, but if something moves nearby, it can twist to look without moving its whole body.
A praying mantis can turn its head to look around without moving the rest of its body, thanks to a flexible joint between its head and body that most insects don't have. This lets it stay perfectly still and camouflaged on a leaf while still tracking movement nearby, which helps it both sneak up on prey and watch out for danger.
Spinning its head in a full circle or blinking its eyes shut aren't things a mantis actually does, its head rotation is limited to turning side to side, and insect eyes generally don't have movable eyelids to blink the way ours do.
This head-turning trick is unusually rare among insects, which is part of why the praying mantis is often compared to a tiny owl watching quietly from a branch.
