On January 5, 2024, a panel tore off an airliner mid-flight over Oregon, forcing an emergency landing and triggering a worldwide grounding of similar jets.
The aircraft involved was a Boeing 737 MAX 9, flying as Alaska Airlines Flight 1282 out of Portland, Oregon. A door plug, a panel that fills the space where an exit door would go on higher-capacity versions of the plane, blew out shortly after takeoff, rapidly depressurizing the cabin. Investigators traced the cause to four bolts that were supposed to secure the plug but had never been reinstalled after the panel was removed for factory repair work.
Airbus A320neo and Embraer E195 are competing jet models from entirely different manufacturers with different door and fuselage designs; neither uses the same door-plug configuration, and neither was involved in this incident.
All 171 passengers and crew survived, but the blowout triggered a worldwide grounding of the 737 MAX 9 and intense regulatory scrutiny of Boeing's manufacturing quality control, findings that the NTSB later described as reflecting systemic oversight failures at the company.
