Without any coastline of its own, this country still ranks as the biggest of its kind on Earth, stretching across the steppes of Central Asia.
Kazakhstan is the world's largest landlocked country, spanning roughly 2.7 million square kilometers of Central Asian steppe with no direct access to the open ocean, though it does border the landlocked Caspian Sea. Its vast territory stretches from the Caspian in the west to the borders of China in the east.
Mongolia is the second-largest landlocked country, but its territory is considerably smaller than Kazakhstan's. Bolivia is landlocked too, but it's a much smaller country in South America, nowhere near the size needed to compete for the top spot.
Despite having no ocean coastline, Kazakhstan is still home to the Baikonur Cosmodrome, the historic launch site used for the first human spaceflight and still used for launches to the International Space Station today.
