Astronauts left footprints on the Moon over 50 years ago, and those footprints are still there today, looking brand new!

Why don't the footprints on the Moon get wiped away?

The Moon has no wind or rain to blow or wash them away
The Moon has no air, so there's no wind and no rain to disturb the dusty ground. That means footprints can stay just as they were for millions of years!

The Moon has no air at all, so there is no wind to blow dust around and no rain to wash footprints away. On Earth, air and moisture disturb loose soil quickly, but Moon dust just sits once pressed into shape.

Nobody visits to touch up the prints, since very few Moon missions have ever happened, and the prints are not painted on, they are simply compressed dust holding its shape.

Scientists expect these footprints to last millions of years, only slowly worn down by tiny meteorite impacts called micrometeorites.
