Even if a thief steals your password, one extra step can often stop them from getting into your account.
Two-factor authentication adds a second, independent check beyond just your password before letting someone into an account, commonly a one-time code sent to your phone, a code generated by an authenticator app, or a fingerprint scan. Because this second factor is something you physically have or are, rather than something you merely know, a thief who has stolen or guessed your password still cannot get in without also having access to your phone or biometric data.
A stronger backup password is still just a password, something that can potentially be guessed, leaked, or reused elsewhere, so it doesn't add the same kind of independent protection. Having two usernames does nothing to stop someone who already has your password from simply logging in with it.
Security experts consistently point to 2FA as one of the single most effective everyday habits for preventing account takeovers, since it blocks the vast majority of automated attacks that rely purely on stolen or guessed passwords.
