It effectively signals to the reader that what follows is a rephrasing or clarification, not a new or additional idea.
'In example' and 'in essence' are not genuine Latin expansions of i.e., they are common but incorrect guesses, and the abbreviation people often confuse i.e. with, e.g., actually stands for a different Latin phrase, exempli gratia, meaning 'for example,' which is used to introduce illustrative examples rather than clarify a point.
Because the two abbreviations look so similar and are both common in writing, style guides frequently recommend a simple memory trick, thinking of i.e. as meaning 'in other words' and e.g. as meaning 'for example,' to keep their distinct uses straight when editing or proofreading.
