Several companies are racing to build walking robots shaped like people to work in factories and homes.
Optimus is the name Tesla gave its humanoid robot project, first teased as a costume-wearing dancer at a company event before real prototypes followed. The idea is to build a general-purpose walking, gripping robot that could handle repetitive factory tasks and, further down the road, household chores, using much of the same computer-vision and AI software Tesla developed for its cars.
Mustang and Roadster are real Ford and Tesla vehicle names, not robots, chosen here because they sound plausible alongside a car company. Roadster is genuinely a Tesla product, but it's a sports car, an easy option to confuse with the robot if you only half-remember Tesla's lineup.
Tesla isn't alone in this race: Boston Dynamics' Atlas can already do backflips and parkour, while startups like Figure have signed deals to test humanoid robots inside real car and logistics factories.
