Turning otherwise-wasted gas into electricity for mining is why some miners set up beside oil wells that flare gas. Oil extraction often produces natural gas as a byproduct in locations too remote to economically pipe it anywhere, so operators simply burn it off, or flare it, to dispose of it safely; some crypto miners instead capture that gas on-site and burn it in generators to produce electricity for their computers, turning a wasted resource into usable power.
Hiding computers from sunlight and the idea that crude oil somehow speeds up computers are both physically meaningless explanations that have nothing to do with the actual electricity-generation motive behind this practice.
Beyond flared-gas setups, a rising share of crypto mining overall now draws on renewable or otherwise underused, 'stranded' energy sources, though critics still argue the industry's total electricity footprint remains a serious environmental concern worth scrutinizing.
