RFID tags contain a tiny chip and antenna that respond with an identifying signal when near a radio-frequency reader, without needing direct line of sight like a laser barcode scanner. Since radio waves pass through cardboard and plastic, one reader near a pallet can register dozens of tagged items essentially at once, speeding inventory counts.
Larger QR codes still need a camera with direct line of sight to each code, no advantage for bulk scanning through packaging. GPS locates a device's position over long distances, not nearby items in a warehouse.
Some RFID tags need no internal battery at all, powered entirely by the reader's radio energy, so a tag can sit dormant on a shelf for years until a scanner briefly powers it up.
