Some island nations are scattered so widely across the Pacific that a single country can straddle both the equator and the 180° meridian at once.

Which country lies in all four hemispheres — north, south, east, and west?

Kiribati
The Pacific island nation of Kiribati straddles both the equator and the 180° meridian, placing its scattered islands in the northern, southern, eastern, and western hemispheres all at once.

Kiribati is one of the few countries whose scattered islands straddle both the equator and the 180th meridian, the line roughly opposite the prime meridian. Crossing the equator places parts of the country in the northern and southern hemispheres, while straddling the 180th meridian, which the international date line loosely follows, places other parts in the eastern and western hemispheres too.

Brazil crosses the equator but does not straddle the 180th meridian, and Indonesia spans a wide range of longitude but does not sit on the 180th meridian either, so neither manages the same four-hemisphere feat that Kiribati's spread-out Pacific islands achieve.

Because of this geography, Kiribati made the striking decision in 1995 to redraw the international date line around its eastern islands so the entire country could share the same calendar date at once, avoiding the odd situation of some islands being a full day ahead of others.
