The world's highest waterfall plunges so far that in the dry season much of its water turns to mist before ever reaching the ground.
Angel Falls earns its record because of the tepui, a flat-topped mountain in Venezuela, it plunges from — a sheer cliff edge that lets water fall almost uninterrupted for hundreds of meters before hitting a lower slope. In the dry season, the water volume drops so much that the falling water breaks apart into mist long before reaching the base.
Niagara and Victoria Falls are both far shorter but carry vastly more water, famous for power and width rather than height — a reminder that "biggest waterfall" can mean different things depending on what's measured.
Angel Falls was named after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who flew over it in the 1930s, even though local indigenous communities had known and named it long before.
