The deepest spot in the ocean plunges nearly 11 km straight down — deep enough to swallow Mount Everest whole and still leave more than 2 km of water above its peak.

Where is the deepest known point in the ocean?

The Mariana Trench
The Mariana Trench in the Pacific reaches nearly 11 km down at the Challenger Deep — deep enough to swallow Mount Everest with over 2 km of water to spare.

The Mariana Trench formed through subduction, where one tectonic plate is forced beneath another, creating a deep, curving trench along the boundary in the western Pacific. At its deepest point, the Challenger Deep, the seafloor plunges nearly 11 kilometers — so extreme that if Mount Everest were placed at the bottom, its peak would still sit more than two kilometers beneath the surface.

The Bermuda Triangle is a loosely defined region associated with folklore rather than any verified depth record, and the Red Sea, though a significant rift valley, is nowhere near as deep.

Because pressure at that depth is roughly a thousand times greater than at sea level, only a handful of specially engineered vehicles have ever successfully reached the Challenger Deep's floor.
