In 2024 the European Union finalized the world's first broad law written specifically to regulate artificial intelligence.
The EU's AI Act takes the approach of setting rules for AI based on its level of risk, sorting different uses of artificial intelligence into tiers and applying stricter requirements, or in some cases outright bans, to the applications considered most dangerous to people's rights and safety. Lower-risk uses face lighter obligations, allowing regulators to focus their strictest scrutiny where the potential for harm is greatest.
Banning all computers across Europe would be an absurd, sweeping restriction on all technology, nothing like the targeted, risk-based framework actually created. Forcing everyone to use a single AI brand would be a monopoly-creating mandate, the opposite of a regulatory framework meant to set safety standards across many providers.
Because the Act is being phased in gradually over several years, companies worldwide, not just in Europe, are adjusting how they design AI systems in advance, since any product sold into the EU market must comply regardless of where it was built.
