The Przewalski's horse is the only truly wild horse left on Earth, and it once completely disappeared from the wild. But by 2026 more than a thousand of them are galloping free again in Mongolia and Kazakhstan.
Przewalski's horses vanished from the wild decades ago because of hunting and habitat loss, but a small number survived in zoos and parks around the world. Conservationists carefully paired up these horses to keep the species going, tracking family lines so the group stayed healthy, then gradually moved growing herds into protected wild land in Mongolia and Kazakhstan where they could roam free again.
They were not simply kept in zoos forever, since the whole point of the rescue effort was to return them to nature, and no new horse species replaced them, they are the very same rare wild horse, just carefully bred back from a tiny surviving group.
Every Przewalski's horse alive today traces back to just a handful of ancestors, which makes this one of the most remarkable examples of a species being saved from the edge of extinction.
