The Moon's gravity tugs on Earth's oceans, pulling the water up and down to make the tides!

The Moon's gravity pulls on Earth's oceans, tugging water toward the side of the planet closest to it and creating a bulge of higher water there, with a matching bulge on the opposite side too. As Earth spins through these bulges roughly once a day, most coastlines experience the water rising and falling as high and low tide.

Wind can stir up waves and choppy water on the surface, but it isn't strong or steady enough to move the entire ocean's water level up and down twice a day. Fish swimming around have no effect on something as massive as the tides at all.

The Sun also pulls on the oceans with its gravity, and when the Sun, Moon, and Earth line up during a full or new moon, their combined pull creates extra-high 'spring tides.'
