In March 2025, a lander built by a private company called Firefly touched down gently on the Moon and started snapping photos right away.
Firefly's Blue Ghost mission was special because it was one of the first times a private company landed softly on the Moon without tipping over, a genuinely hard feat other attempts had struggled with. Landing safely let it start taking photos right away.
This was not the first spacecraft ever to reach the Moon, since national space agencies landed there decades earlier, and it did not bring animals to the Moon either.
Landing safely on the Moon is technically very hard: even space agencies have had landers crash, so each soft landing by a private company is a real milestone.
