Push two magnets together and something surprising happens.
Two magnets can push or pull each other without touching at all. Every magnet has an invisible magnetic field around it, and when two fields meet, they attract or push apart depending on which ends, called poles, face one another.
Magnets don't turn into water or create light on their own; magnetism is strictly about invisible push-and-pull forces, not changes of state or glowing.
The whole planet Earth acts like a giant magnet, with a molten metal core creating a magnetic field, which is why a compass needle always swings to point the same direction.
