When you push a cup upside down into water, air already fills the whole inside of the cup, and air takes up space just like water does, so the water can't push its way in.
It's not sand or ice trapped inside — there's nothing solid in there at all, just invisible air doing its job of keeping the space filled.
Divers use this exact same idea in real life with diving bells, which trap a bubble of air so people can breathe while underwater!
