Stir a spoonful of sugar into warm water until it vanishes.
The sugar spread out and dissolved, breaking into pieces too tiny to see and mixing evenly through the water. Dissolving happens when water surrounds and separates the sugar's tiny particles so completely they seem to vanish, even though they are still there.
The sugar did not float to the top, since dissolved sugar spreads through the glass, and it did not turn into air, because dissolving is not the same as evaporating.
You can prove the sugar is still there by tasting the water, and if it all evaporated away, the sugar would be left behind.
